A Response to Today’s Terroristic Attacks at the US Capital

Dearest Ethos Equity Community –

This morning my faith was fueled knowing that Georgia’s newly elected senators would deliver an increased level of representation for our country. But more than that, I was filled with pride and hope knowing that when courageous leaders like Stacey Abrams work tirelessly to overcome barriers to justice and reconciliation, new pathways are formed. Human connections are cultivated and the collective power of people is harnessed in a way that catalyzes collective liberation.

Then within hours, like so many of you, my joy was disrupted as I witnessed an attempted coup contextualized as patriotism. The entire world watched as white nationalists tried to forcefully undermine American democracy and subvert the upcoming, peaceful transfer of presidential power. Government officials were terrorized and the nation’s capital was looted as law enforcement stood by. Individuals who are unequivocally and consistently persecuted in their peaceful pursuit of equity and justice were triggered by this nonchalant response.

As we finish this first week of 2021, take note that “business as usual” is long gone. For many, recent events extend beyond political turmoil and are aspects of racial violence. So if you’re in a position of professional leadership I encourage you to keep the trauma BIPOC are carrying top of mind and acknowledge that the load is heavy and the associated fatigue is real.

Consider the following six suggestions when thoughtfully navigating this volatile time.

• Name racism, injustice and anarchy for what it is – use precise and accurate language

• Avoid gaslighting or policing the perspectives of BIPOC counterparts

• Establish psychologically safe spaces where individuals can voluntarily connect and process

• Assess available mental health resources and explicitly express support in collective participation

• Review and readjust DEI initiatives to ensure there are actionable commitments to racial justice

• Take time to audit organizational systems for policies and procedures that may unintentionally perpetuate systemic racism
